Very oddly, while this may look like the first post of my Media project, it is actually the opposite and rather just me redesigning the layout and editing a bunch. The old website (https://ris2450.wixsite.com/mediafilm) was not up to standard.
Another reason for the redesign not only has to do with a change in the “plan”, as I have changed the course work from a pitch of a spy sending a Morse code into a completely different genre: horror. It had become clear that my team mates did not meet deadlines, produce work up to a standard quality, or make sufficient effort, we all decided to part ways. Production delays and unprofessional working conditions led me to this executive decision, which benefited everyone and personally I believe me the most as I had all the ideas and pitches, editing and technical skills. I also had the key equipment like camera stabilisers, as well as knowledge in film making for small class projects for advertisements up to large 700+ teams for business coming in the top 2.5% which for a first attempt was not bad.
Here is a small summary of the new pitch, which I will film very soon hopefully to have something to show my teacher. After getting the go ahead I plan to re shoot it and perfect it.
So what is the film, you may be asking? Before I can tell you first let me tell you what the inspiration for it was. I am 17 and very close to taking the driver’s license test here in the UAE (which is usually done at 17 and a half). As you can’t really just learn to drive out of nowhere I had to obviously drive the car somewhere initially to learn the basics. Fast forward to recently when my dad allowed me to drive the other car we have which is more “powerful” but more importantly has a reverse camera or back camera (the other car is older and does not).
Dad being very paranoid, the first time I got permission was to just take out the car and do a small lap. As I was taking the car back, full of adrenaline, just when I started to reverse, I heard a ‘beep’ made by the car to alert the driver that something is behind and I slammed the brake and looked right at the camera but there was nothing. As I started to back up again the beeping got much louder, as if something was right on the sensor but there was nothing. Nobody.
I started to sweat the this point and feel the cold feeling, I got out and checked what was up in back (note: this was night time, around 7 and it was dark). As I went back to check nobody was around, it appeared that slightly towards the wall of the garage there was a neighbour’s cat most likely. At that moment my heart started beating again – it made me wonder… had I not seen the cat I would have most likely had been terrified at least for that night.
This is where I came up with the idea of ‘what if nobody was back there, sure you could blame the sensor but what if the camera could show a shadow or something?’ With perfect timing, my team fell apart and manpower fell short – this was now a 1-2 person job, and my idea came in exactly when I needed it.
Some editing and great audio tension will make it work. A lonely car park under a building in darkness is whereI plan to re-shoot. If the one I take in the garage seems to have potential (as it is a lonely dark car park with no cars and should show isolation and a dark atmosphere while a house garage can give people the thought of familiarity and warmth which is not what I want), I will continue to use it.
